Paste paper decoration is a technique invented in Europe around the 1500’s and 1600’s.
In the 1700’s paste papers were diffused in the field of bookbinding particularly
in Germany, France, Italy and successively in North America around 1750.
Principal ingredients were vegetable glue and pigments.
Primitive examples were mainly monochromatic and the most common colours
used were Burnt Siena and Indigo Blue.
The recipe has remained almost the same to this day,
but there are more colour combinations and pattern variations.
One of the most well-known artists who applied this technique to their creations
is Eric Carle (1929-2021), writer and illustrator based in the U.S.A. and the author
of the celebrated illustrated book for children “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” (1969).
